Environmental Technician
(Temporary Opportunity)
This is technical field and office work, related to the City’s arboricultural practices and procedures, including the administration of Surrey’s Tree preservation By-law and office and field review of the following: Tree Cutting Permit Applications, Arborist Reports, Tree Protection Measures, Replacement Tree Plantings and Landscape Installations. The incumbent reports to the Trees and Landscape Manager, Building Division
Typical duties include: reviewing arborists’ reports; reviewing tree cutting permit applications; inspecting tree protection recommendations and installations prior to demolition and construction; reviews By-law Enforcement Officers’ reports of illegal tree cutting. As well, reviewing restoration proposals for environmentally sensitive areas may be required. The position will require regular contact with developers, builders, homeowners and the general public to discuss tree-related issues. Performs other related duties as required.
The successful candidate will possess a University Degree or Diploma in Forestry Arboriculture or Horticulture or a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution. A minimum of 3 years experience in arboriculture-related work, including experience in hazard tree assessment is required and a valid BC driver’s license and the use of the incumbents own vehicle for site visits is a must. The incumbent will be accredited or be eligible for accreditation with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

University graduation in an arboriculture-related program or equivalent is required. Eligibility or certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arborists is an asset. Along with excellent oral and written communication skills, you should have experience in and knowledge of:

- local tree species, diseases and pests.

- UFS, Inc. is on contract to provide landscape installation monitoring
and arboricultural consulting services throughout the construction of

and potentially review landscape construction drawings. You will read and

of Duties:

Identify needed tree
work on a 2,000 mile electrical transmission system.
This includes identification of hazard trees and other normal
cyclic tree and brush maintenance.
- Lay out work and
obtain customer permission for tree removal, herbicide work, brush
